Cameron Smith

A (very) brief history of golf. The modern game we know and love today first originated in 15th-century Scotland. The classic 18-hole round was created at the Old Course at St Andrews in 1764. Today, there are four major championships in men’s professional golf: the British Open, The Masters, the U.S. Open, and the PGA Championship.

And did you know that Original Penguin’s history with the world of golf goes way back? It all started back in 1955, when Pete the Penguin was first embroidered onto shirts; it involves a few cocktails, a necktie and a taxidermy penguin, but you can read more about this here. The golf shirt was launched in the US, making Original Penguin the originator of this classic style.

Since then, Pete has left his mark on some legends in the golfing world, including pro golfer Cameron Smith, who is currently our official ambassador. Let’s learn a little more about Cameron and his love of the sport.

29-year-old Cameron (yes, 29) turned pro in 2013, and since then, he’s gathered quite a string of wins under his belt. In 2017, he partnered with Jonas Blixt, and they won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, and again in 2021 with Marc Leishman. He has also won the 2020 Sony Open in Hawaii and the Australian PGA Championship, which he won back-to-back in 2017 and 2018. And he was runner up in the 2020 Masters.

But what about outside the game? Everyone needs a good walk-on song, and we think Cameron’s nailed his choice: Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes. Still an Aussie at heart, Cameron’s favourite golf course is located down in Melbourne, Australia, and he is often spotted out and about with his dachshund, Kendrick.
